So Now What?

Needless to say, the events of yesterday afternoon were tragic. We wake up this morning to hear that the death toll has risen to nine. Hundreds of thousands of individuals are affected by this. Reduction in metro service, cessation of MARC service, CSX freight traffic has been haulted, and plenty of road closures are having a ripple effect in our area.

So where do we go from here? The cause for this accident has yet to be determined. In the meantime, several stations along the red line remain closed as the accident investigation and clean-up continues. The red line is operating from Glenmont to Silver Spring, and from Rhode Island Avenue to Shady Grove. Takoma, Fort Totten, Brookland-CUA stations remain closed.
Shuttle buses are being provided from Silver Spring for those passengers needing to connect along the red line. In fact, I saw the buses lined up and ready for action this morning...

I guess it's too early to speculate about what happens next, as it hasn't quite been determined exactly what happened yesterday. There was an incident on the red line earlier in the afternoon near Tenleytown (I think it was a derailment), forcing trains to single track in that area. This incident caused a domino-effect delay, stacking trains up along the line. The train stops along the line, and another train rams into it from the rear.

What happened?

According to Catoe, all trains are running in manual mode until the cause of this tragedy has been determined. Also, all trains are pulling up to the front of the platform now.

It's funny you mention the incident at Tenleytown. That's the specific reason I decided to attempt to transfer at Ft. Totten instead of riding to Gallery Place as normal. I've noticed when there's a delay, I never get a seat when I get on at Gallery Place, so I go up to Ft. Totten and transfer there. The cars are always empty.
